Eating update

Today Alex has feeding therapy with his Cheri. He is being exposed to many new textures, and is handling them like a pro. Our only problem, hes not hungry, so he doesn't care about eating, the good news is that he has the skills. He chews, he gets food off his bottom lip with his top lip, he swallows, and he doesn't gag on the textures we have introduced him to, like bites of Graham cracker, vanilla wafer, and crumbled nutrigrain bar.
So skills wise, we are good. Motivation we are no where.

Good for you Alex. Now get hungry!

Marissa has the exact opposite problem. She is motivated and loves having tastes of things, but does not have the oral motor coordination to handle it.

All a work in process.

Go Alex! I love the pictures of messy kids eating, although I am so anal that mine didn't look like that unless Daddy was feeding. He's more fun and makes a lot more noises.

Sister, you have to know these are my favorite kinds of pictures!

I was going to ask you what it was with us, all the focus on eating and pooping, and then I remembered! We're mommies! That's what we do. We count the spoonfuls, and watch the poop and can describe it in detail to pediatricians or anyone else who gives us an ear. As my BIL said, so sweetly and patiently, ... "Ya aren't the only ones in the history of the world to have babies, ya know!"

He is the joy of "His Cheri's" day...I loved carrying him to the car after our session. Also loved spending time with Joel. What a great big brother.
Have a great Thanksgiving. Remember that thinned out pumpkin pie, Cool Whip and crumbled crust idea.

Think about last Thanksgiving and now, how far he has come! You are the best mommy! You got him there!

I will have to try that pumpkin pie idea posted by Cheri. We are in the same boat with Max. He is never hungry. Don't you love g-tubes! Have a great Thanksgiving!

I love the pictures! That is awesome that he has the skills to eat. It's so hard to get a g-tube kid to WANT to eat. Lack of hunger makes eating not interesting! I hope he loves the pumpkin pie on Thanksgiving. :)

Oh yes, about that hunger thing...it is a challenge but I think the tube feeds are meeting likely 95% or more of his needs. Like a gas tank on a car, he is almost at the full mark. His oral feedings are practice meals and to learn the skills. His tube feedings are there to give him the gift of the best nutritional status possible. He is not at a place yet where we cut tube feeds back, but he is mastering each level of feeding skills he needs for the future. So when the time comes, we can cut back and let have less in the tank by tube so we can fill up the deficit by feeding by mouth. The tube is our friend. I wish more people in the medical field understood that. The tube has fueled his development, all the accomplishments, the sitting up, the brain growth...the ability to fight infections. He is doing great, so don't worry. Love ya Alex's Cheri
